A summary of last years’ events
As you walk down the hills of Rebild you may wonder what’s so special about this place. Perhaps you have been at Grand Canyon and seen the sunset? Perhaps you know your way around a rain forest in Brazil and do not find nature at Rebild of any interest?
And perhaps that is what’s so special about Rebild. The fact that Rebild is the only place outside of the US that celebrates the 4th of July. Bill Clinton framed it like this back in 1997:
And H. M. the Queen of Denmark, too, brought her best wishes to Rebild as Her Majesty visited in 1997. So did former prime minister Poul Schlüter and his wife, and Samuel Rachlin is still the one and only "toastmaster" of Rebild.
However, Samuel is best known from his employment as a correspondent for Danish Television in USA; as information chief for the World Bank in Washington and as TV2's correspondent in Moscow.
In 1998 Maersk McKinney Moeller was appointed President of Honour. The speech he made in the hills are still referred to as the speech. And perhaps it is no surprise, that Maersk several times has been nominated as the no. 1 Danish business man. Actually, the Maersk Group is concidered to be an “AAA” shipping firm in the world.
1999 offered lots of entertainment. But what the audience didn’t know of was that the police of Skørping avoided a political group of extremists interrupting the party.
In 2000 Victor Borge, too, was elected President of Honour at
Rebild. It pleased him in such an extent that he immidiatly announced he would donate DKK 10 million. However, Victor Borge was a great man with an impressive character. Money doesn’t come into play in this sense as Victor showed us what
the party was all about: Smile! Have fun!
And so, focusing on what Rotary Exchange Students are really fond of, this is the very essence of Rebild: Living out the spirit and ideas of Victor Borge. Knowing yourself and getting to know other people. Establishing realtions and developing ideas and experiences.

For 85 years, Danes and Americans have come together on the hills of Rebild to celebrate America's Independence Day. The faithfulness with which this tradition has been observed is a testament to the deep
friendship and profound goodwill between our two nations.
As we Americans celebrate the anniversary of our nation's birth, we give thanks not only for our enduring heritage of liberty under law, but also for the continuing
expansion of democratic ideals around the globe. More than 200 years after our founders signed the Declaration of Independence, no political creed has proven to be more powerful than the simple statement: that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
When the United States won its independence, Denmark was one of the first countries to
recognize our fledgling democracy. Today, Americans take great pride in our friendship with the people of Denmark, a country whose advocacy of human rights and democratic principles around the world is an eloquent affirmation of the values
we share.
Best wishes for a memorable celebration.
